Now that the UCAS applications have closed, there is always pressure on education establishments at this time of year to make plans for their Spring and Summer Open Days which are usually held between March and July. Not only is there a need to convince prospective students that their organisation should be in the top two choices by the 2nd May 2018 UCAS deadline for accepting places, but there are also the Year 12 students to consider. They are just at the start of their course searching process. Sixth Form Colleges will also be putting pressure on their students to have a plan of action ready as soon as the Year 13 starts in September - the Open Days are a great way of showing students what their further education life and learning is likely to be like.
The more engaging an organisation can be, the more likely it is that a student will register for an Open Day - by getting them to visit a college will result in a far higher chance of getting into their top five choices on the UCAS form, or indeed to place them number 1 or 2 on an already completed form.
We recently worked with York St John to raise the profile of the University during that all important selection period for prospective students. Rolling out relevant animations or videos into the social media streams of your target audience can significantly increase your chances of getting a student interested. Based on psychology research, the brain can process video 60,000 times faster than text and it also suggests that if someone sees something around five-seven times, they are likely to remember it. Repetition is a powerful tool in Brand Awareness! This is great to know if you are marketing to people who may not necessarily know your brand. If you can keep rolling out small reminders, and social media is fantastic for this as it reaches, very effectively, your target audience, it is more likely that students will think to find out more about your organisation because it is already familiar to them.
There are numerous ways in which organisations in the education sector can target their audience - explainer videos about the types of courses on offer. Mini-documentary style films with positive feedback from existing students or simply short edits relating to fun, lifestyle options in the town/city where the University is - after all, prospective students will be interested just as much in the social life as they are in the individual course that they choose!
Why not get some engaging film or animation content ready to roll out this Spring - be ready to encourage students to make your college one of those final two UCAS choices in early May and to reach out to the Year 12 group just at the start of their journey. We can offer a range of options to cover everything from social media edits to full promo films and TV adverts. The important thing will be for you to try to make the information available to students multiple times on the various platforms - you will need prospective students to be thinking “Yes, I’ve heard of that organisation - they seem familiar to me - perhaps I should be looking at their courses…’ Get your students thinking about you as soon as possible!
