York St John - Step by Step

We’re currently working on an animation project for York St John University. We wanted to share the process with you, and take you behind the scenes in producing this series of bespoke animations.

Our vision was to create multiple animations that showcase the types of courses you can study at YSJ University, at all levels, within each of the nine academic schools. It was important for us to highlight the individuality and differences in these academic areas of study.

The medium of animation was the most obvious choice for this project. The campus is ever-changing, and any change in facilities could make a conventional film out-of-date and limit its use in the future. It was important for the University to have longevity for these videos by using animation instead of film. Animation allows us the flexibility to make amendments in the future if changes are made to the courses/subject areas, if required.

Our producer Zoe took on the project, which she admits was one of the largest projects she had worked on to date! She explains: “We were able to rely on each other’s individual skills and experience to get the job done efficiently and productively. We had complete confidence in delivering a collection that exuded quality and fun.”

York St John had a clear vision but the University was more than happy for us to get creative. The animations were headed by Nico, who’s style was influenced by the previous animations he had produced for the University. Although we were anticipating a simplistic style, given the quantity and limited timeframe, what flourished was a unique series of animations bursting with content and pace.

Zoe says: “A particular highlight for me was seeing the animating team working together. I loved how well they all excel in their own specific areas. Nicole with her speedy and accurate Illustration skills, Nico with his eye for design and detail, and Matt with his ability to perfectly and precisely build an animation.”

It was a pleasure collaborating again with York St John and their guidance and contribution throughout was brilliant. We’ve linked one of the animations below for you to take a look at.
